No one really knows how they would have responded to the Holocaust as it was happening around them (unless they lived through it). We can, however, learn a great deal from how the choices made by three great figures of the age: the philosopher Hannah Arendt, the Reformist rabbi Leo Baeck and the Christian theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Hannah Arendt chose to flee Germany where she drew attention to what was happening under the Nazis. Leo Baeck chose to save whom he could by becoming the head of the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. Dietrich Bonhoeffer returned to his native Germany from safety in the US to confront the evils of Nazism from within, viewing death in doing so as the Christian "cost of discipleship."
